Oracle EBS 11i to R12.1.3 Upgrade

Oracle EBS 11i to R2.1.3 upgrade can be a lengthy process and requires different teams to work togather for a successful execution.

The idea behind creating this upgrade guide was to put down all the TECHNICAL steps at one place. There are many functional steps that are involved in EBS 11i to R2.1.3 upgrade, which are NOT included in this guide. As such this guide is good starting point for an Oracle Apps DBA to get details on steps involved in the upgrade process. Going through all the related Oracle documents is essential for planning a production upgrade to R12.1.3 as different 11i setups may have different pre-requirements to be met before upgrade to R12.1.3.

This upgrade guide has been divided into below five parts:

1) Install Fresh EBS 11i on Linux 5 32 Bit (PART 1 in “11i to R12.1.3 upgrade” series)
2) Upgrade database 9.2.0.6 to 11.2.0.4 in 11i (PART 2 in “11i to R12.1.3 upgrade” series)
3) 11i Split configuration- Move 11g Database to Linux 6 64Bit (PART 3 in “11i to R12.1.3 upgrade” series)
4) Upgrade 11i TO R12.1.1 (PART 4 in “11i to R12.1.3 upgrade” series)
5) Upgrade R12.1.1 To R12.1.3 (PART 5 in “11i to R12.1.3 upgrade” series)

Overview:

Below is the overview of what each part accomplish:

1) Install Fresh EBS 11i on Linux 5 32 Bit (PART 1 in “11i to R12.1.3 upgrade” series)

– Create virtual machine with Linux 32 Bit (64 Bit not supported)
– Install 11i with Fresh or Vision database. We chose fresh database just to save disk space.

End Result : 11i single node (both database 9.2.0.8 and application on same 32 Bit node)

2) Upgrade database 9.2.0.6 to 11.2.0.4 in 11i (PART 2 in “11i to R12.1.3 upgrade” series)

– Upgrade database from 9.2.0.6 to 9.2.0.8 and then to 11.2.0.4.
– Apply all interoperability patches for EBS 11i to work with 11.2.0.4 database.
– Upgrade JDK/JRE to supported version.

End Result : 11i single node (both database 11.2.0.4 and application on same 32 Bit node)

3) 11i Split configuration- Move 11g Database to Linux 6 64Bit (PART 3 in “11i to R12.1.3 upgrade” series)

– Configure another Linux machine with 64 Bit OS.
– Install 64 Bit Database 11.2.0.4 software on the new 64 Bit Linux machine.
– Move 11i database from old Linux 32-bit to new Linux-64 bit machine and attach 11i application to new 64 Bit database.

End Result : 11i Multi node (database 11.2.0.4 on 64 Bit Linux machine and application on same 32 Bit Linux machine)

4) Upgrade 11i TO R12.1.1 (PART 4 in “11i to R12.1.3 upgrade” series)

– Prepare 11i database for upgrade (configuration, applying patches etc).
– Install R12.1.1 upgrade filesystem on the same 64 Bit Linus machine that we configured earlier and where our database currently run.
– Configure R12.1.1 application with existing 11.2.0.4 64 Bit database.

End Result : R12.1.1 single node (both database 11.2.0.4 and application on same 64 Bit node)

5) Upgrade R12.1.1 To R12.1.3 (PART 5 in “11i to R12.1.3 upgrade” series)

– Upgrade all ORACLE_HOMEs (database, forms 10.1.2, web 10.1.3)
– Upgrade R12.1.1 application to R12.1.3 on Linux 64 Bit machine.

End Result : R12.1.3 single node (both database 11.2.0.4 and application on same 64 Bit node)

Infrastructure used:

Virtualization:

Oracle Virtual Box has been used to create Linux Virtual machine.

Operating System:

a) OEL 5.6 32 Bit has been used for EBS 11i setup. Note that 64 Bit OS is not supported for EBS 11i.

b) OEL 6.5 64 Bit has been used for upgraded EBS R12.1.3 system. So during the upgrade process we also transferred our application/database from 32 Bit to 64 Bit OS.

RAM:

Total RAM for the Host machine is 16 GB. We allocated around 8-10 GB to our Linux Machine and it worked OK.

CPUs:

Our Host Machine is Quad-Core and we allocated 2 CPU to  our Linux Machine.

Hard Disk:

We used 512 GB Solid State Drive (SSD). Using SSD over HDD really provides performance improvement.
